Somdutt Brajaraj Patnaik is an enterprise cloud and distributed systems leader whose career has been built around one consistent challenge: delivering infrastructure platforms that large organizations can trust at scale. As an SWE Manager II at Google Cloud Platforms, he leads a team of engineers designing enterprise architectures for Google Cloud VMware Engine—providing fully managed VMware environments that let enterprises modernize and migrate while retaining operational familiarity and governance expectations.

Patnaik’s leadership profile is grounded in deep technical range across cloud-native architecture, distributed systems, enterprise security, and applied machine learning. Before Google Cloud, he held senior engineering leadership roles within the VMware and Broadcom ecosystems, where he consistently operated at the control-plane layer—building the management and platform services that determine reliability, compliance posture, and operator experience. At Broadcom’s VMware Cloud Foundation division, he led a re-platforming initiative for VCF Management and control-plane services, encompassing highly available application services (PostgreSQL, Kafka, object storage, ClickHouse), infrastructure components such as ingress gateways and dual-stack IPv6/IPv4, and security-hardening efforts including FIPS compliance with strict SSL verification. He also drove productization work for configuration drift detection using Saltstack—an operationally practical capability that reduces risk in long-lived enterprise fleets.

At VMware’s Cloud Services Platform, Patnaik led large engineering organizations delivering core commercial and operational experiences: usage metering, service reporting, and data pipelines that power customer commerce at scale. In parallel, he led identity federation initiatives that enabled enterprise identity systems to integrate with VMware Cloud Identity across SaaS ecosystems—creating SDKs that standardized global notifications and consumption management patterns across hundreds of internal microservices. The common thread in these programs is platform thinking: reducing fragmentation, accelerating adoption, and making complex distributed systems easier to operate safely.

Earlier in his career, Patnaik applied machine learning and expert systems to infrastructure reliability at Cisco Systems (Project Starship / Intersight), building recommendation engines that transform telemetry into predictive maintenance actions for UCS deployments. At Morgan Stanley, he architected the Agile Infrastructure program that delivered a private IaaS cloud with self-service provisioning and a “spot-server” resource-scavenging scheme—reducing provisioning time while increasing hardware ROI through better utilization.

His technical credibility is reinforced by a pattern of innovation and knowledge contribution. He has filed patents spanning microservice API asynchronicity and, in earlier research at Columbia University and Verizon Labs, patented and published scalable prevention mechanisms for DoS/DDoS attacks on SIP-based VoIP infrastructures—work that blends protocol integrity with real-world security constraints. He has also presented at industry forums, including VMware RADIO and NANOG, contributing to the professional discourse on analytics, heterogeneous data strategy, and scalable security defense.

Equally central to his identity is talent development. Patnaik has built teams, instituted engineering processes, led design and code reviews, served on promotion committees, and guided engineers through rigorous growth pathways—demonstrating leadership that multiplies impact by strengthening the people and standards behind the platforms.
